Year 10 is a key transition point where students lay the academic groundwork for their senior studies. It’s a critical time to refine core skills, strengthen subject knowledge, and build the confidence needed for success in Years 11 and 12.

Matrix Year 10 courses are designed to support this transition with structured learning in English, Maths, and Science - helping students feel fully prepared for the demands of senior high school.

Course Structure

  • Duration: 9 weeks per term

  • Lesson Length: 1.5 hours per week

Year 10 English Course

The Year 10 English course prepares students for the analytical and evaluative demands of senior English. Students refine their ability to construct sophisticated arguments, explore complex texts, and write with clarity and purpose under timed conditions.

Term Topics

  • Term 1: Rhetoric and Persuasion – Speeches, advertisements, news, and debates

  • Term 2: Narrative Fiction – Style, characterisation, metafiction, and metanarrative

  • Term 3: Modernism – Modernist poetry, planning long responses, and drafting

  • Term 4: Shakespeare's Hamlet – Soliloquies and performance influences

Year 10 Mathematics Course

The Year 10 Mathematics course tackles more abstract and non-linear concepts, preparing for the rigour of Advanced and Extension Maths in senior years. This course focuses on algebraic fluency, trigonometric applications, and logarithmic thinking - core areas that underpin problem-solving.

  • Term 1: Quadratic Equations and Probability

  • Term 2: Trigonometric Ratios and Further Trigonometry

  • Term 3: Curve Sketching, Non-Linear Relationships, and Functions

  • Term 4: Polynomials and Logarithms

Year 10 Science Course

The Year 10 Science course strengthens students’ scientific literacy and prepares them for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Through investigation and theory, students explore the second half of each core science strand while developing experimental and analytical skills crucial for success in specialised Science subjects.

  • Term 1: Chemical World – Chemistry Part 2

  • Term 2: Living World – Biology Part 2

  • Term 3: Physical World – Physics Part 2

  • Term 4: Experimental Science

Holiday Courses

Matrix offers 4-day Holiday Skills-based Courses for Year 10 students in English and Maths. Each course runs for 2 hours per day and focuses on developing essential skills that reinforce term learning and prepare students for the term ahead.

These holiday programs are ideal for students who want to:
